Do It Yourself: Adventure Food – Scrambled Eggs *

Whole Egg Powder - Do not inhale

Whole Egg Powder - Do not inhale

I realize that writing this is one of those “duh” articles, mainly because powdered eggs has been a staple of emergency preparation as well as trail-goers for several years.

I figured however, I may as well write about it!  So this will be a quick article.

To start off with, I titled this “Scrambled Eggs *”, to denote that it really can be made with anything. I am just doing a simple scramble with sausage crumbles, which is what I will focus the most of the preparation on.

With regular powdered eggs. Prep time is fast and simple.  I used Healthy Harvest’s whole egg powder for my eggs, and it calls for 2 Tbsp of egg powder mixed with 3 Tbsp of water to =  1 large egg.

It really is as simple as mixing and cooking.

I do, however have some observations once you start adding substance to it.

First off, I added sausage to mine. Just plain dehydrated pork sausage.

As with most dehydrated and freeze dried foods, there is a “reconstitute” time you should let it sit in liquid.  Healthy Harvest’s directions state that 5 minutes is enough time for the sausage. Under my own tests, and making this meal twice now using the sausage, I can honestly say that 5 minutes is not long enough.

Do It Yourself: Adventure Food – Biscuits and Gravy

Biscuits and Gravy

Biscuits and Gravy

Anyone who has been following my blog now for awhile, understands that one of the vows I made before I take my upcoming trip to the Arctic, was that I would create my own Biscuits and Gravy Recipe.

It is easy to sit down, with fresh ingredients, fry up some sausage, add some flour, milk and spice to taste.  I found out it is another thing to try and make it into a dry, moisture-free, light weight, and simple to make packaged meal.

There was a lot of hurdles along the way that I had to get over along the way, taking the time to research or think up a solution, test it out, apply it, try again, and hope for a positive outcome.

As previously mentioned in my article “Do It Yourself: Adventure Food – Poor Man’s Chicken and Dumplings“, I had originally intended that meal to try an analog for making my biscuits.

After a successful experiment using Jiffy Buttermilk Biscuit Mix to drop into the soup directly as dumplings, and make a meal with flaky biscuits in about 15 minutes, I later tested a couple weeks later the application in the field.  Trying out a second idea I had for mixing the biscuit dough while on the move. A simple solution of a plastic bag, and some water, and “Massaging” the dough until ready to drop spoonfuls of it into the simmering soup.

Weekend Wrap-Up: End of March Edition

Heading out on an impromptu overnight camping trip.

Heading out on an impromptu overnight camping trip.

Well March sure came and went like a breeze.

Last week of course I ordered my new Adventure Riding Gear. I am super excited to start getting it in. The first of it should show up tomorrow (Jacket and Pants).

I also ordered a top box from Happy Trails. I am hoping (fingers crossed), that with this top box, I will be able to pack all the essential items I will need for my trip without having to purchase larger panniers.  I see no reason that it would not work out, as I have now successfully done 2 camping trips (more on that later) with what I have.

The one draw back is I ordered some Roto Pax jugs to originally mount to the rear of the new panniers I was going to buy. Because I was going to originally purchase the 10.5 inch Panniers from Happy Trails, they would have fit perfectly and protected on the very back of them, allowing me to keep an extra gallon of gas on one side, while using the other side for a gallon of water.

Crossing County Lines: Destination – Camping the Mountain Loop Highway

Sarah all packed up, ready to go camping!

Sarah all packed up, ready to go camping!

A few weeks ago in my articled titled “Weekend Wrap-up: High’s, Low’s, and Somewhere In Between” I had mentioned a ride up around the Mountain Loop Highway.

The main purpose of this ride, was to scout for a camping spot for us to pick out for a later date to come back to and camp at.

After we had all gotten home, later that week we all decided that we would head up to go camping on March 12th.

The main purpose of this camping trip, was a shake down trip. We all needed the time spent not only packing our bikes, but organizing them, deciding what could and couldn’t go, and give us all an idea of what was needed to actually do a camping trip on our bikes.

This trip was extremely important to me, as I knew it was going to finally give me a chance to not only learn how to pack my bike, but it was going to give me a chance to use all of my gear in the field, which would give me invaluable information on what I will need to eventually make changes to for my Arctic Expedition this summer.

No Time to Waste

It is now just over 4 months until my departure from Seattle Washington up to Inuvik, Northwest Territories and I can’t help but look at the last couple months and how fast they really have gone.

It seems only a couple weeks ago I had finalized my route, spoke with Gus about it, and he agreed to come along.  So with that date coming closer, I have also realized I still do not really have the bike I would like to do this trip.

Before I purchase a new bike, I really need to get rid of one of my other bikes. Regardless if it is the Track bike, or my R6 Street bike, I need to get rid of them. I don’t have the room, nor the resources to just go out and purchase a new bike (oddly enough, I cringed when doing tax returns and realized my pay cut I took last year would have bought me a new BMW R1200GSA in full. Youch).

Changes to Life’s a Breeze

Today I went ahead and executed some changes with Life’s a Breeze.

As of today, the old URL of http://mic.phrozen-phaze.com has been retired. All of the old links however, will still continue to automatically return to the original articles that they had previously went to.

Phrozen-Phaze is an old Domain I’ve owned for several years, that has taken on many shapes.

For a lot of years, it was my own personal blog.

But this website became so much more in the last several months. I had originally put it together to mainly write about my motorcycle projects. Then I decided to expand it to cover the planning stages of my trip, and then I started to post my ramblings of my research and my reviews, and rides, and it just continued to grow content wise, and I realized I was enjoying it.

What started out as a website to share my projects, slowly turned into a website sharing my adventure, and so with that I decided to change it to a new URL. http://micsadventure.com

The XT225 Resource Page gets a good amount of traffic, becoming one of the top searches for XT related information. This section will be revamped soon with an entirely new format. Easier to navigate, easier to find the info you are in search of. How-To’s, Part’s Diagrams, Part Information, etc. I plan on building this section out, in hopes that it will continue to offer those who are in need of information can easily find it.

Other sections will get revamped and changed as well. I have already started to add more navigation in them, but I plan on changing the overall look and feel.

And last of all, I will be retiring my blog title of “Life’s a Breeze”. Don’t get me wrong, as the title is everything I believe in about this site, but although Life is a Breeze, it is the Adventure that we must face as it whips us around life, and this site is about mine, in hopes that it will entertain, educate, and assist with those who are in search of knowledge and adventure of their own.

With that said,

Welcome to My Adventure,

Mic
